Summer Sipping Wines and Glasses
As the sun returns, the decent thing to do is put up our annual recommendations for summer tipples, while it’s still legit. So without further ado, let’s sip right in…
Atlas Feteasca Regala, 2018, Romania, 12.0% abv.
A lively, lightly sparkling wine with overtones of a soft sauvignon palate. We found this very easy to drink and recommend drinking on its own. Available from Asda £5.25 per bottle.
Louis Guntrum, Riesling Spatlese, 2017, Germany, 13.0% abv
An intense and powerful wine full of lime, pineapple and tropical fruit. The nose boasts a complex mineral character. Excellent with spicy foods and exotic flavours. Available from Waitrose £17.99 per bottle.
Royal Tokaji Late Harvest, 2016, Hungary, 50cl, 11.0 % abv.
The Tokaj region in Hungary produces this beautifully aromatic, sweet white. On tasting it shows complexity and richness, with characters of fresh lemon and dried apricots, orange blossom and honey. Available from Laithwaites £14.99 per bottle.
Ginestieres Merlot, 2018, France, 13.0 % abv.
A medium dry combination of velvet and plums, this southern French classic will weave it’s herbaceous nose into your senses long after you’ve taken a sip. Available from Laithwaites – £9.99 per bottle.
Tarantella Merlot Puglia, 2018, Italy, 13.5 % abv.
As sensuous as the dance it’s named after, this Merlot is smooth and full of spiced damsons and cherries that tantalise your palate. Available from Laithwaites £10.99 per bottle.
Hacienda de Lluna Rosada Moscatel, 2018, Spain, 5.0% abv.
This is a sweetish, light rose that does not compromise on taste, despite the reduced alcohol content. For tasting, think summer red fruits with a crisp finish. Comes refreshingly recommended from the author. Available from Laithwaites £5.29 per bottle.
*Laithwaites celebrated their iconic history with a tasting and educational event in London earlier this year.
No matter how heady or more-ish you may find these wines, please drink responsibly at all times.
