SKATE With Fortnum & Mason At Somerset House This Winter.
Last week grade-listed building Somerset House at the Aldwych opened its doors to the winter landscape by transforming the central courtyard into an ice rink for SKATE a winter event sponsored by Fortnum and Mason until 10 January 2016. Their pop up store and Christmas Arcade is located in the west wing of Somerset House and sells presents and decorations for the home.
The Lodge serves seasonal cocktails and mocktails, perfect for your after-state, or fuller menu of salads and meat dishes and fondue.
On the ice, we found our skating feet rusty, however a few laps around the rink had us relying less on the side rails for guidance and more on our risk taking savvy. There’s nothing like negotiating a bunch of people standing by the barriers to improve your competence. For a trouble free skate we recommend wearing close fitting clothes like jeans as dresses cause wind resistance, which means you’ll be off balance while skating. Your feet will also tire prematurely if you don’t ‘push-off’ properly due to incorrect skating posture to start with. Take it from us! Failing that the skate lounge has seating where you can rest and watch others zoom around the rink. Visit SKATE for prices and rink opening times. Other events include club nights and private skate lessons for children. Skate sessions can also include extras like après-skate drinks, confectionery or dining.
