New Wet and (Dry) Season Drinks 2025
Here is our pick of mid-month wines this chilly and sometimes not so chilly January, in case you skipped the main celebrations last Christmas. All our tipples can be found courtesy of your local Asda supermarket, whose wines have won many prestigious awards over the years. We’ve also included a no-alcohol content glug, for those observing Dry January. All price points are per bottle.
Specially Selected Kooliburra Chardonnay 2022, South Australia, 13.0 % abv
A chardonnay is not so without a tropical fruit overtone or lychee note and this white wafts of the tropics in abundance. Add in peachy vibes and creaminess on the palate, followed by a mild vanilla finish. £6.99
Specially Selected Kooliburra Merlot, 2023, South Australia, 14.0% abv
Swish on the apples and red berry palate in this rich and juicy, smooth yet bold offering. Pleasant drunk alone or together with red meats and heavily flavoured casseroles. £8.49.
Bowler & Brolly Sparkling Brut Reserve, 2021, England, 12.0% abv
From the estate of John Worontschak, Head Winemaker of the Denbies Estate in Surrey comes this dry and light rosé. You will find citrus and fresh green apples dancing on the nose and palate. Tart minerality is evident throughout, thanks to a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Syval grapes. Pairs with seafood. £17.99.
Zerozecco, Sparkling White 2019, Argentina, 0% abv
As the name suggests, this is a sparkling wine void of alcoholic content, though the palate is based on de-alcoholised wine. Enjoy a fruity and intense flavour whose sweetness marries easily with deserts. A sure choice for those observing Dry January month. Just £2.99.
Ballycastle Limited Edition White Chocolate Country Cream Liqueur 12.0% abv
Indulgent and velvety, boasting a blend of double cream, white chocolate and alcohol. The nose hints of vanilla and white chocolate, and when drunk, this liqueur feels silky. Though delightful, the author didn’t find it on a par with the more traditional coffee cream liqueur. This is fine drunk on its own and pairs well with deserts, such as the very fruity Morrisons White Chocolate and Clementine cheesecake, topped with swirls of white chocolate – see image. £7.49 for a 70cl bottle.
