If you’re the spontaneous type, you’re going to love this feature. Brighton and Hove is a seaside city an hour by train out of central London, or two hours by coach. By car, take the A23 southbound out of London.

Seaside lovers may know that the Brighton Fringe festival in Sussex is running until 1st June. The Brighton Fringe is part of Brighton Arts Festival, which is England’s largest arts festival, with more than 700 events taking place every May.

Fringe events include drama, comedy, theatre, musicals, live poetry performances, creative writing, crafts and family workshops, and the major House and Open House exhibitions. House and House Open finish this Bank Holiday weekend (see our main article in our Arts & Cultures section) so hurry if you’re going down.

Some comedies take place in pubs located around Brighton and many are free. Additionally many theatre events are priced under £10, with late running performances including, ‘The Last Lunch’ (finishes 31 May), and ‘Revelations’, (ends 30 May).

North Laines

Brighton boasts a rich mix of cultures, and at weekends many people travel to the locality. The library in Jubilee Square is a contemporary two level building and a great sightseeing piece. Other notables are the superb Brighton Pavilion (sadly no photography is allowed inside) and the Big Wheel experience by Brighton Pier, unless you’re terrified of heights. Families will be drawn to the Sea Life centre, see http://www.visitsealife.com/brighton/ or the Toy Museum, see http://www.brightontoymuseum.co.uk/.

Couples can stroll in the popular North Laines area – rife with bars, cafes and boutiques where people eat outside and stop to watch live street performances. The weather hasn’t been great lately but that shouldn’t prevent interested parties from making the journey to the south coast.

If staying longer than one day, check out the Artist Residence in Regency Square (spot the pink door in the image!), a quirky character-laden guesthouse giving easy access to the city’s central areas, see http://www.arthotelbrighton.co.uk/. Artist Residence is a short walk from Brighton railway station and is sea -facing.

Lively eats can be found at The Creperie in Ship Street, across the road from the sea front, see http://www.thecreperiebrighton.com/. Or choose from more than 800 others in Brighton and Hove.
