The House and Artists Open Houses art exhibitions run concurrently with the Brighton Festival that takes place every May in Brighton. House and Artists Open Houses are now in their seventh year and will run until 25 May 2015.
Artists Open Houses 2015 features exhibits from more than 1000 local artists, including students, at all stages of their career. With free entry, this unique setup allows the public to see artists and their work in their homes or rented shop spaces (see Adrian Walker art and workshop, No 2. Brunswick Town trail). Adrian’s workshop is white walled which further soften the surrounding for his breathtaking oil on canvas paintings of scenery. Artists Open Houses artworks include sculptures, paintings, carvings, jewellery, ceramics and textiles, which can all be bought directly from the artists’ home. The Artists Open Houses is categorised along 13 easy-to-follow ‘trails’ in East Sussex as far north as Ditchling and beyond, west to Portslade, and east to Brighton’s Marina. Independent trails also run alongside the main trails. The Artists Open Houses booklet is the definitive accessory containing colour-coded maps, dates, artist biographies and addresses. No art enthusiast will be without it – just select the trail(s) convenient to you and go visit. This event is open at weekends only throughout May though there are few ‘houses’ open daily (these tend to be artist pieces displayed in commissioned outlets – see Silvia K ceramics in Jigsaw’s shop window, (No.5 Central Brighton trail).
Dog lovers might be interested in the Sillwood Road Artists Open House (No 8. Brunswick Town trail) where the artist’s exhibits are all canine oriented with sculptures and portraits on mixed media of man’s beloved four legged friend. Visitors can bring their pets for on-the-spot drawings, and to share dog biscuits, tea and chat with other dog lovers. Please note booking for this particular Artist Open Houses visit is essential,
