The what, why and how etc about Young Creative Chevrolet

What it is: Young Creative Chevrolet is a pan-European annual contest for students of Applied Arts. It began in 2007 and aims to foster creativity by helping young artists develop themselves whiles highlighting the brand’s core values  .

To help celebrate its centenary, Chevrolet challenged applied arts students in 22 European countries to develop commemorative pieces in each of the following five disciplines. Fashion, Music, Photography, Video and Visual Arts. A record number of 552 projects by 155 schools were entered this year in the following five disciplines –

Where:

The culmination of hard work and awards ceremony takes place at the Battersea Power Station, South London, now disused. The Boiler House area where private events and ceremonies take place boasts impressive architecture. There is no other venue quite like the BPS and it is worth visiting just for viewing purposes alone.

The selection process: In each participating country, a panel of judges (specialists in arts and others) award three prizes per participating discipline.

All first-prize winners of the national awards automatically participate in the pan-European competition in which an international jury eventually elects the best three projects in each discipline.

Why it works:

Creativity in all its forms is always seeking to push boundaries. Chevrolet’s design exploits many art forms, visual, architectural, its advertising uses sound. Models wearing fashions are sued in advertising. Why not combine all these themes have fun and further creativity at the same time\?

The winners:

Fashion – Lubica Mildeová from FA STU Bratislava in Slovakia, was an interesting re-interpretation of “the little black dress”, best described as integrating several elements from the 1910 period like the plisse, v-neck and draped asymmetrical arm shape and modernising them.

Music – A trio from IED Roma in Italy produced “a modern, upbeat song, with good structure…” which captured the judges’ attention.

Photography – Here Juliana Křížová and Jakub Vlček from Univerzita Tomáše Bati in the Czech Republic encapsulated everything about Chevrolet’s past, present and future in a beautiful image. “100 years of history” in every cornet of the photograph.

Video – Here students were challenged to produce a short invitation to Chevrolet’s 100-year celebrations. This year the jury awarded first prizes to five students from Ecole Emile Cohl in Lyon, France, who fulfilled the brief of communicating Chevrolet’s line-up and heritage. The second first prize went to three students from AA&RF FUD UJEP in the Czech Republic for presenting a “fresh, creative” video.”

Visual arts – The judges felt Sofia Stergiopoulou from OMIRAS in Greece designed the best commemorative poster by combining sketch design drawings of iconic Chevrolet cars with a clear anniversary message which included the Chevrolet Volt electric car, (the future of Chevrolet).

The expectation and standard of achievement of this year’s ceremony was summed up by Wayne Brannon, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe.

“This is a very special year for Chevrolet, our centennial year. The students’ ability to take our brief and turn it into something that is so inspiring amazes me.”

In addition to receiving monetary prizes and trohpies, all winners can expect to join professional artists for a year of work experience.

Other speakers on the night included Red or Dead’s co-founder Wayne Hemingway and Neville Brody, an award winning graphic designer.

Entertainment on the night was provided by London based Bluey Robinson whose musical influences include The Jackson 5, Bob Marley and Phil Collins.
