Why Europe is such a popular holiday destination
Whether going close to home or further afield, European destinations have remained the most popular among travellers for generations.
Some holidaymakers are beginning to tentatively plan their upcoming trips as Coronavirus restrictions are lifted across Europe – and shorter breaks within the continent may become prevalent as uncertainty remains.
If you are looking at places to get away once things settle into a new normal, here’s why a European trip should be near the top of your list.
The Cuisine
According to a survey conducted by Jules Verne, Italy would be the most popular destination were respondents able to immediately travel at will under no restrictions.
The home of pasta, pizza, risotto and gelato… we can see why!
But there are plenty more culinary delights to sample across the continent. Tapas and Paella in Spain, French onion soup and Moussaka in Greece – it’s always worth sampling the local delicacies when on your travels.
It may even give you some inspiration in your own kitchen when you get home!
The endless experiences
Opera in Milan, theatre on the West End, shopping in Paris’ boutiques. Take in fairytale castles on the Rhine River, climb the Alps or Pyrenees, recharge in Budapest’s spas, sail the almost endless stretches of coastline.
We could go on, but you get the point! Whatever it is that tickles your fancy, you’ll find it in at least one corner of Europe.
You can take in every landscape
The range of things to do is matched by the environments to do them within.
If you’re a mountain-climber, then some of the best hikes with stunning vistas are available to you. Rolling hills and atmospheric forests can be found in several countries, as well as flatter terrain if you’re a keen cyclist.
More than a third of respondents to Jules Verne’s survey said that a spring 2021 date is going into the books, perhaps in the search of some early-season sunshine in the Algarve, where golden beaches, stunning marinas and seafood give a year-round summer vibe.
The rich history
Europe’s history is rich, complicated and just waiting to be explored. Head to Greece and explore the origins of modern civilisation. Pay your respects by visiting sites of wartime conflict in Belgium or the haunting and educational Auschwitz in Poland.
Of course, travelling to some of Europe’s great cities will give you the chance to sample some of the world’s most renowned architecture.
From classical structures like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and Rome’s Colosseum, to modern masterpieces like the ‘friendly alien’ Graz Kunsthaus or Marseille’s Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations, there’s something for every building buff when you travel to Europe.
