How to Take the Perfect Wedding Photos

Being a photographer can be one of the most rewarding careers out there; you get to share in some of the most important events of people’s lives and have a role that they will be so grateful to you for; helping them to capture some of their most wonderful memories. 

However, this can also be a lot of pressure, as in most cases there is zero room for error and the consequences of such are huge for your client. One example of this is being the photographer for a wedding, so here we offer some tips on how to make sure you get those perfect shots. 

Preparation Is Key

As with most things, preparation is incredibly important. Firstly, make sure that all of your equipment is in full working order, including being fully charged and having backups like spare batteries, cameras and lights just in case something goes wrong. Double check that you have also packed all of the equipment that you will need, on the day. 

Secondly, meet up with the bride and groom before the big day to make sure you have a clear idea of the kind of shots, they would like you to take. Do they like traditional shots or more candid photos? Would they like you to take control or blend into the background? Think Outside the Box

As well as sticking to the kind of images you have pre-planned with the bride and groom, take a wide variety of different shots in different styles which you can surprise them with later. Think about which moments will be the most important to capture, as chances are there will be some that they might not have thought of.

Some things to focus on are capturing the emotions of the couple and their guests, which most often come to light when they are reacting to what is going on. For example, reactions to the vows being read out, or the look on the groom’s face as the bride walks down the aisle. The first kiss and the first dance are also must-haves for your collection.

Be Personable

Don’t be afraid to really mingle with the guests, as getting to know who everyone is will help you to make sure you’ve captured the most important moments. You will be able to make sure you have a range of photos of the most important people, such as the couple’s parents, siblings and best friends, and you will be able to group people together appropriately.

Getting to know the relationships between guests will also help you to keep an eye out for special moments, for example if a friend of the bride hasn’t seen her in a while you can capture their reunion, or if there is a potential romantic union on the cards between a bridesmaid and a groomsman you could capture that too.

Taking the perfect wedding photos is a mixture of technical skill and the ability to connect on an emotional level with the couple and their guests.
