What to do on a Day Trip to Windsor
There’s something very special about Windsor. As the site of the recent royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, you know that visiting this grandly historic city is going to reveal some extraordinary sights and uniquely British experiences. When the Queen uses the city as her weekend retreat, you know there has to be something special about this gorgeous city. There really is something for everyone to enjoy in Windsor, and whether it’s shopping
(as business is booming according to BusinessCaseStudies), getting out into green spaces, or exploring the long history, here are some of the best things to do on a day trip to wonderful Windsor.
The Castle
No trip to Windsor is ever going to be complete without taking some time to check out Windsor Castle. If you want to feel like a princess, then this is where Meghan Markle married into one of the richest and most famous families in the world. The building is truly spectacular and can be traced back to the 11th Century. Start your visit by taking a slow stroll up the Long Walk, and you might even be lucky enough to spot a few deer along the way. You can even explore some sections of the inside of Windsor Castle, and among the sites on show is the amazing doll’s house built for Queen Mary in 1924.
Building Blocks
If the royal family aren’t something that appeals to you, then you can skip the castle and head straight to Legoland. It’s more than just a collection of brilliant lego-built cities and iconic and recognisable scenes. Enjoy some high-adrenaline fun too with a ride on the Dragon Ride rollercoaster that will get you buzzing. This is a great day out for everyone and whether you’re visiting Windsor as a couple, a family, or even on your own, Legoland is a delightful and often inspiring place to spend as many hours as you can.
Place a Bet
If you time your Windsor visit right, then you would be well advised to head to the Ascot Racecourse. Take some cash with you, because there’s nothing quite so thrilling as placing a bet on a horse running on one of the most famous race tracks on earth. If you’re visiting Windsor in July, then you might even be able to get tickets to the Royal Ascot event that takes place every year, and you can sip champagne and put a bet on the royal choices of the year.
Cross the Bridge
There’s something jaw-dropping about the way that the River Thames glides through the heart of Windsor. It adds a real sense of calm to the city, and it’s been used by boaters for generations. One of the best ways to take in the full glory of the river (and avoid getting too close to the royal swans and the geese) is to just stop and gaze at the waters from the charming Windsor Town Bridge. If you’re planning a walk to nearby Eton, then this bridge is also the one to take, but don’t race over it. Take your time and enjoy the glorious view.
Wining and Dining
You’re obviously going to need to find somewhere to refuel and there are plenty of choices. Windsor has a wide range of restaurants and bars, and each has its own unique charms and specialities. There are some very good pubs in Windsor to choose from, but you should always pick the ones that have the best selection of craft ales and ciders. That’s what the area specialises in, so it’s the ideal opportunity to find your next favourite tipple.
Windsor is steeped in history and yet keeps up to date with modern trends too. If you want a quick escape from London, or you’re simply looking for somewhere stunning to explore, then Windsor should be very high on your list of destinations.
