Leave it to the experts – moving made easy
When moving house, the list of jobs to do is endless. There’s the packing to organise, utilities to switch over, mail to be redirected and removals to sort – not to mention arranging new schools for the children and changing your dentist and doctor. But with a bit of know-how and some expert help, the job can be made much easier:
End of tenancy cleaning
Whether you’ve been living in a rental property or are selling your home to new owners, you’ll want to leave the accommodation clean. If you are renting, then the condition you leave the property in when you move out could depend on you getting back your deposit. A professional cleaning service such as Molly Maid will get the job done smoothly and tailor-make the job to your requirements. As well as giving your property a thorough clean, a good company will also offer as standard the cleaning of cupboard doors, skirting boards and windowsills.
Removals
You could hire a van and do all the moving yourself, but by the time you’ve battled with squeezing that three-piece sofa out of the living room and then worked out how to manoeuvre it out of the front door without scratching off most of the paintwork, you’ll probably have wished you’d left it to the experts. If in doubt about finding a reliable removal firm then go on recommendations or have a look at the British Association of Removers, which ensures its members have the necessary training, expertise and insurance to carry out your move.
Finding the best energy tariff
When you move you don’t have to stick with the previous owners’ energy supplier. You could save hundreds of pounds a year by switching. If you go to Confused.com you can enter in your postcode and a few basic details and the site will do the work for you in giving you an idea of the best deals around. Remember to take meter readings when you move into a new property so that you’re not being billed for the previous owner’s usage.
Save money on TV, broadband and phone
Moving house is a great time to see if you can get a better deal on other utility bills. Try a comparison website to see if you can pay less if you switch suppliers or change your broadband package deal.
Redirect your mail
Rather than relying on the new tenants to forward on your mail you could use the Royal Mail’s redirection service. Even when you’ve notified people of your new address there are bound to be some people you’ve missed. The redirection service can be used to send your mail to your new address for up to 3, 6 or 12 months.
Furnish your new home for less
Scour ebay or sites such as Freegle and Freecycle to make kitting out your new property cheap and easy. While you can get some great deals on ebay, Freegle and Freecycle offer items completely free of charge. There are some top quality items to be found on the sites which are full of stuff people don’t want anymore. There is some rubbish as well but if you do a bit of research you can bag amazing finds for absolutely nothing.
Hopefully these tips will have given you some food for thought when it comes to moving house and help make the task less stressful.
