4 Things To Consider When Moving Away From Home
Are you still living in the same town or city you grew up in? Perhaps you were so happy there that you bought your first home in the same area or maybe you stayed on in the family home when your parents chose to retire by the seaside or abroad.
But, now as you approach your late 20’s or head into your early 30’s it has dawned on you that you need to fly the nest. You have spent almost three decades living in the same place – you know the area and people inside out – which is a comfort, but you now need to experience something outside of this bubble.
Perhaps, you have met the man or woman of your dreams and you are ready to make the leap for love or maybe you have landed your dream job, which means moving to an unknown city or town.
Whatever your reason, if you want to sell your house quickly, so you don’t miss out on this incredible career opportunity or a partner you could potentially spend the rest of your like with, then click here to find out about selling your home for cash.
Once that big step is out of the way, there are a few things you need to consider as you make the big move.
Where are you going to live?
The first consideration is whether you buy or rent – of course, if you have already started climbing the rungs of the property ladder it is a big commitment to buy a home in an unknown location. If things don’t work out (and fingers crossed they do) you will find it harder to move on – so perhaps rent for a few months, until you are sure?
However, if you are moving for a partner, will you live together? Or would it be better for your relationship (perhaps you haven’t been together that long) for you to live on your own. If you go for the second option would you be better off finding someone to share with – you want to get to know people on your own terms after all and not just through your partner.
If you are moving for work, is anyone in the company looking for a flatmate? This way you have a roof over your head and have started making friends in an unknown place!
How are you going to make this new place feel like home?
You have spent 20 to 30 years living in the same place, so it will be hard to stop thinking of it as home. However, what you need to do is find ways to make this new place feel like home or you will never settle in.
One of the best ways to do this is by joining a local club – perhaps you are passionate about sport, so a netball team could be a good start? Get involved in everything and anything you can in the local area, so you get to know people and start making friends.
Get to know the area
Of course you knew the area you grew up in like the back of your hand, but this new place will seem large and alien to you. When you first move it might feel like you will never know your way around so take some time to get to know the area. Perhaps go out for a walk, or a bike ride and explore what it has to offer. You may want to do this by yourself at your own pace or with a new colleague, housemate or partner.
You need to let everyone know you have moved
That doesn’t just mean posting a Facebook status to let all your friends know that you have finally left the quiet, country village you grew up in, for the bright lights of a well-known city! There are people you really need to inform – use this handy checklist to ensure you don’t miss anyone.
This new place will feel like home before you know it!
