5 Things You Didn’t Know About Rihanna
Rihanna took the shoe industry by storm when she collaborated with Puma to release her stylish Fenty x Puma collection. You loved her shoe line, and you know the lyrics to her catchy music, but there are also some things you don’t know about her. Read on for five interesting facts about Rihanna that you haven’t heard before.
1. Jay-Z signed Rihanna and helped her rise to fame. When Rihanna was 16 years old, Evan Rogers, a record producer from America, was in Barbados, and one day he noticed Rihanna at an audition. A few months later, Rihanna moved to Connecticut and began living with Rogers and his wife. Rihanna recorded her future hit song “Pon de Replay,” and Rogers mailed the song to multiple record labels. Jay-Z, then-president of Def Jam Recordings, received the song and called Rihanna to come for an audition. As soon as she finished singing, Jay-Z signed her, and the rest is history.
2. She was bullied because of her skin color. At school, Rihanna’s classmates bullied her because of her lighter skin. Rihanna’s dad was of Barbadian-Irish descent, so Rihanna’s skin was lighter. She was told she was “too white,” and this led to her being shy. However, she stayed strong and credits her years in school for making her tough and giving her the courage to face criticism later in life.
3. Her home life wasn’t easy. Rihanna grew up in Barbados with her little brother, her mom named Monica Braithwaite, and her father named Ronald Fenty. Her mom was an accountant, and her dad managed a clothing storeroom, but at home their lives were difficult. Rihanna’s dad had a drug and alcohol addiction and had physically abused her mom and even her at one point. It was so bad that Rihanna began to have headaches at only 8 years old, and they didn’t stop until her parents divorced when she was 14.
Rihanna then lived with her mom and brother. While her life became a little better after the divorce, it still had its obstacles. Her mom worked long hours, so Rihanna took care of her younger brother, a huge task for a 14-year-old girl.
4. She was in the army. When Rihanna was a teenager, she joined the army in Barbados to prove to the guys that she had just as much strength, if not more, than they did. She became an army cadet and eventually achieved the rank of corporal. Shontelle, a famous pop artist from Barbados, was Rihanna’s drill sergeant and pushed Rihanna to reach her full potential in the military.
5. She skyrocketed to fame. Once Rihanna signed with Def Jam Recordings, it took only four months before she was music’s newest star. Her song “Pon de Replay” came out in May 2005, and it was an instant hit, taking the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her first two albums were wildly successful, and “Umbrella,” her unforgettable song from June 2007, soared to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Her songs continue to be unforgettable hits that are on playlists and radios all over the world.
