4 ways that you can manage back pain
If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to suffer from back pain, you’ll know the excruciating agony it can cause. Everything we do goes through our backs, ranging from walking to moving our heads around to swinging our arms. That can make back pain an absolute nightmare to live with.
Thankfully, there are several ways in which you can battle back against a bad back. From ice treatments to more radical thinking with the deployment of supplements, don’t be fooled into thinking that back pain is something you have to live with.
Here are four ways that can help you manage back pain.
Ice your back
Ice is best applied in the first 24 to 48 hours of the back pain starting as it can help to reduce the inflammation. While the temptation at that stage may be to go for heat treatment to soothe and cover the pain, this can be counterproductive as it increases the inflammatory process. Remember to never leave an ice pack on for more than 20 minutes and always wrap it in a thin towel so that there isn’t direct contact with the skin.
Look at taking supplements
Studies have shown that there are a wide range of relief supplements which can help manage back pain. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are effective for all kinds of pain management because they are naturally occurring compounds found in the body’s fluids and cartilage. A lack of vitamin D has been linked with lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition which affects the lower back and so some experiments believe upping your intake of vitamin D can help reduce pain. A daily dose of devils claw has a positive effect on inflammation, something which is also one of the benefits of CBD uses.
Keep it moving
The temptation when you are suffering from back pain is just to lie down until it goes away – but our spines and back muscles are designed to be flexible and always on the move. Denying them that can lead to further stiffness and even greater agony. Nobody is saying you should go out and attempt to break a world weightlifting record, but you should try and keep your back moving to maintain looseness and flexibility. Here are some stretches which can help relieve back pain.
Watch your feet
Your feet can have a massive say in the health or your back and as a result, any problems that come with it. People who suffer from flat feet, in particular, are more at risk from back pain. Flat feet can cause a misalignment with the ankle with effects the entire connection of joints right the way up through the knees, the hips and ultimately the spine. As a result, your choice of footwear can help to manage back pain. Custom made shoes with inserts can help adjust your posture and the way you walk, relieving the pressure being placed on the back. It probably doesn’t need saying, but high heels are a big no if you’re suffering from back problems, so be sure to change those four-inch stilettos for heels of no more than one inch.
